Breast lift, also called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that improves the shape of the breasts by lifting the nipples and eliminating excess skin.  Following pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as weight fluctuations and also as a result of aging, the shape of the breasts may change and the position of the nipples becomes lower.  In addition to sagging, the volume of the breasts is often decreased.  Women who desire increased breast volume as well may combine a breast lift with breast augmentation (implants).

How is a Breast Lift Performed?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that lasts for about two and a half hours and is performed under general anesthesia.  During breast surgery, you will be monitored by trained medical professionals who will ensure that you are comfortable and safe.

After making an incision on the breast, Dr. Kim will remove excess skin from around and below the nipple area. Depending on the amount of the excess, the resulting scar may either be limited to the nipple area or may include a vertical or inverted T-shaped scar on the lower part of the breast. In most cases, the pigmented skin around the nipple (the areola) is surgically reduced to a more pleasing and proportional size.  Sutures, skin adhesives, or tapes will be used to close the incisions.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Any healthy woman with no ongoing breast problems would be a suitable candidate for a breast lift.  Women who have been recently breastfeeding will want to allow sufficient time for the milk to dry up before undergoing a breast lift.  As in many types of breast surgery, an individual with a significant history of breast cancer in the family should consider the procedure more carefully.

Recovering from a Breast Lift

Most women will be able to resume normal activities within a week or two with relatively little discomfort during the healing period. Patients can expect the shape of the breasts to be good initially, and will improve further as the breasts go through settling and the skin relaxes and molds.  This may take about two to three months.

There is a small chance that post-surgical infection or bleeding may occur, causing the wound to take longer to heal. Sensation of the nipples is not affected by a breast lift procedure alone. Scarring from the incisions is permanent, but will likely fade and become less visible over time.

Breast Lift Results

Breasts that have a more youthful and uplifted appearance is the goal of breast lift surgery.  Regaining the youthful shape of the breasts is a boost to many women’s sense of self esteem.
